Why Is My Riding Times GT73 Range Lower Than Expected? Five Factors and an Official Battery Test

If your GT73 does not go as far as expected on a full charge, it is understandable to wonder whether there is a battery problem. However, lower range does not automatically mean that one of your batteries is faulty.

The GT73 delivers up to 85 miles using throttle power and up to 155 miles with pedal assist. These are maximum figures, and your actual range depends on how and where you ride. Speed, terrain, rider weight, cargo, tire pressure, temperature, wind, and riding style can all affect range.

Instead of looking only at the final mileage, ask whether the result was different from what your GT73 normally achieves under similar conditions.

Maximum GT73 Range and What Affects It

The GT73 uses two removable 48V 18.2Ah batteries, providing a combined capacity of 36.4Ah. It delivers up to 85 miles using throttle power and up to 155 miles with pedal assist.

The important phrase is “up to.” Your actual result can vary because the bike uses different amounts of energy in different situations. Speed, rider weight, surface, elevation, tire pressure, weather, and riding style can all affect range.

Getting less than the maximum advertised range does not automatically indicate a battery problem. A high-speed ride over hills, for example, will normally use more energy than a steady Level 1 ride on flat pavement.

Start With These Five Factors

When your GT73 range seems lower than expected, begin with riding habits, riding speed, road conditions, vehicle load, and tire pressure.

  1. Riding habits:
    Hard acceleration, repeated stopping, and heavy throttle use require more energy than a smooth, steady pace. If you are comparing two rides, consider whether you used the throttle differently or made more stops than usual.
  2. Riding speed.
    Higher speeds generally require more energy. In unlimited mode, Level 1 is about 15.5 mph, Level 2 is about 21.7 mph, and Level 3 is about 37 mph. A Level 3 ride is not a like-for-like range comparison with a steady Level 1 ride.
  3. Road conditions.
    Hills, gravel, sand, mud, loose ground, and rough trails place more demand on the bike than flat pavement. Off-road riding will normally use more energy than riding on a smooth, level surface. Our

  4. Vehicle load.
    The bike has to move the rider plus any cargo or additional equipment. More total weight can require more energy, particularly during acceleration and climbing. Keep your load reasonably similar when comparing two tests.
  5. Tire pressure.
    Low tire pressure increases rolling resistance. Check both tires before testing instead of relying only on how they look.

Check the Bike Safely

If your speed, route, load, and tire pressure have not changed significantly, check the bike itself. This is especially important if your GT73 previously traveled farther under similar conditions and the change happened suddenly.

Turn the bike fully off before inspecting it. Remove or disable the batteries where appropriate, and keep your hands, clothing, and tools away from moving parts. Do not ride if a brake, wheel, tire, connector, charger, or battery appears damaged.

  • Brake drag: A brake pad that continually touches the rotor creates resistance throughout the ride. With the bike powered off, check whether either wheel is unusually difficult to turn or produces continuous rubbing. If you hear ongoing rubbing, have the brake checked before using mileage as a battery test.
  • Wheel or bearing drag: A wheel that feels rough, tight, or unusually difficult to rotate may have a wheel or bearing problem. If you are unsure how to correct the issue, do not ride the bike. Have the brake, wheel, or bearing checked by a qualified technician.
  • Tire condition: Check both tires for uneven seating, bulges, cuts, unusual wear, and incorrect pressure. Do not ride with a damaged tire.
  • Battery connections: With the GT73 powered off, visually inspect accessible battery connection areas for dirt, corrosion, loose seating, discoloration, damage, or signs of overheating. If a connector looks burned, melted, or badly damaged, stop using the bike and contact our support team. Do not attempt electrical repairs unless you are qualified to do so. 

Confirm Both Batteries Are Charged

The GT73 includes two 54.6V 2A chargers, allowing both batteries to charge at the same time. Before running a range test, charge both batteries until each charger indicates that its charging cycle is complete. Use the chargers supplied with your GT73 or an approved replacement.

Test the bike in its normal dual-battery configuration unless the GT73 manual or our support team specifically instructs you to test a battery separately. Do not disconnect, swap, bypass, or modify battery wiring solely for a range test.

An incomplete charge can look like a range problem. Contact our support team if one charger no longer completes its normal cycle, behaves differently from the other charger, stops unexpectedly, or has a damaged cable.

Lithium-ion batteries gradually lose some usable capacity over time. If the reduction happened gradually after long-term use, normal battery aging may be part of the explanation. Understand Dual-Battery Behavior

Do not assume that both battery indicators will decrease at exactly the same rate. Depending on the bike’s wiring and controller configuration, the batteries may discharge sequentially or share the load. Uneven battery indicators alone do not prove that there is a fault.

Instead, check whether both batteries completed a full charge, whether both batteries are recognized by the bike, and whether the bike provides power normally throughout the ride. Record any unexpected switching, power loss, or shutdown, and send those details to our support team.

Run a Repeatable Range Test

A fixed route alone does not create a reliable comparison. For a useful baseline, use the same rider, total load, tire pressure, temperature range, route, riding direction, average speed, assistance level, and starting battery condition whenever possible.

  1. Fully charge both batteries. Charge both batteries until each charger indicates that its charging cycle is complete.
  2. Use the normal dual-battery configuration. Test the bike with both batteries connected as normal unless our support team or the GT73 manual specifically tells you to test a battery separately. Do not disconnect, swap, bypass, or modify battery wiring solely for this test.
  3. Use Level 1 throughout the test. Keep the bike in Level 1, at about 15.5 mph, rather than changing riding levels during the route.
  4. Choose a flat, paved route. Select a route with as little traffic, stopping, climbing, and rough terrain as practical so that you can repeat it later.
  5. Ride out and back when possible. Using the same route in both directions helps reduce the effect of wind on the result.
  6. Maintain a steady pace and record average speed. Record the distance, route, terrain, rider and cargo weight, tire pressure, temperature, wind conditions, starting battery indication, and ending battery indication.
  7. Stop if you notice a safety concern. Do not deliberately drain the batteries to 0%. Stop riding if you notice unusual heat, abnormal motor noise, an error code, unexpected power loss, or any damage.
  8. Let the bike cool before a repeat test. If you repeat the test, allow the bike and motor to cool to a similar condition before starting again.

One test gives you a baseline. A second test under similar conditions provides a more useful comparison and helps show whether your GT73’s performance has actually changed.

Check for Abnormal Results

There is no single mileage number that automatically proves that a GT73 battery is faulty. A 40-mile throttle ride at higher speed over hills, for example, cannot be directly compared with a steady Level 1 test on flat pavement.

Range loss is more concerning when it is sudden, repeatable, and happens under similar conditions. It is also worth investigating if your GT73 shuts down while the display still shows charge, loses power unexpectedly, shows an error code, makes unusual motor noise, becomes unusually hot, or does not charge normally.

If the bike shuts down, note the distance ridden, the battery indication shown on the display, any error code, whether the bike powers back on, and whether the same issue happens again. If it is safe to do so, take a short video of the display when the issue occurs.

The Bottom Line

If your GT73 range is lower than expected, first compare your riding habits, speed, road conditions, load, and tire pressure. Then check for brake drag, wheel resistance, tire damage, incomplete charging, damaged connections, charger problems, battery aging, or unusual electrical symptoms.

For the clearest comparison, repeat the same flat-road Level 1 test at about 15.5 mph under similar conditions. The key question is not whether you reached the maximum advertised range, but whether your GT73’s performance changed noticeably and repeatedly on comparable rides.
