E-bike battery fires have become one of the fastest-growing fire risks across North America. In major cities, structural fires caused by lithium-ion batteries have increased dramatically in recent years. Nationwide, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) documented 227 incidents involving micromobility battery fires between 2019 and 2023, resulting in 39 deaths and 181 injuries — and they've acknowledged this is "a vast undercount."

Here's the good news: most of these fires are preventable. Once you understand what causes them, you can take simple steps to protect yourself, your family, and your home. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) had even chosen "Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home" as the theme for Fire Prevention Week in 2025, emphasizing the importance of buying, charging, and recycling batteries safely.

The Short Answer

Most e-bike battery fires are caused by:

● Incompatible chargers and cheap aftermarket parts — Using a cheap, unbranded charger or battery, or buying a charger online that isn't made by the bike's manufacturer.

● Mismatched or modified components — Especially aftermarket controllers that exceed the battery's safety limits.

● Mechanical damage — Dropping, crushing, or puncturing the battery.

● Overnight charging — Leaving the battery plugged in and unattended.

● Counterfeit products — Fake batteries and chargers with no safety certification.

● Water damage — Exposing batteries to rain, moisture, or debris.

The Big One: Modifying Your Controller Without Upgrading the Battery and Motor

Here's a scenario we see far too often: A rider wants more speed and power, so they upgrade their e-bike's controller. But they keep their original battery and motor. This is a dangerous mistake.

The e-bike system is a carefully balanced triangle: the battery, the controller, and the motor are designed to work together. When you change one component without changing the others, you create a mismatch that can lead to catastrophic failure.

Many of these fires involve secondhand vehicles or bikes modified with parts purchased online. According to the NFPA, physical damage, crushing, overcharging, or using charging equipment not designed for the battery can trigger a fault that causes the battery to catch fire or explode.

The right way to upgrade is all at once: If you want more power, upgrade the controller, battery, and motor together as a matched system. This ensures all components are compatible and can handle the increased power safely. 

Overnight Charging Is a Hidden Danger

Charging your e-bike overnight is one of the riskiest habits. The CPSC explicitly urges consumers to never leave charging devices unattended. The FDNY has also warned that "a malfunctioning or uncertified lithium-ion battery can explode at any moment, charging or not."

Even though most modern batteries have built-in Battery Management Systems designed to prevent overcharging, manufacturers do not recommend unsupervised charging. Fire risks aside, leaving a battery charging overnight puts unnecessary stress on the cells and can reduce its capacity and lifespan. The NFPA recommends charging devices on a hard surface, never under a pillow, on a bed, or on a couch, and unplugging the device or removing the battery when it's fully charged.

The Problem with Counterfeit and Non-Compliant Batteries

One of the biggest drivers of e-bike fires is the widespread availability of cheap, counterfeit, or non-compliant batteries. The CPSC reviewed thousands of incidents and found a "dismal rate – below 11% – for e-bikes" complying with voluntary safety standards. In April 2025, the Commission advanced a proposed mandatory safety standard for lithium-ion batteries in micromobility products.

The Importance of Using Genuine Parts

Using only manufacturer-approved batteries and chargers is one of the most important steps you can take to prevent fires. Cheap, uncertified parts may look similar but often lack the safety protections built into genuine components. Always buy from a trusted source — whether it's us or another reputable brand — and avoid aftermarket parts sold through online marketplaces with questionable quality control.

Even major e-bike brands have faced battery recalls. In late 2025, the CPSC warned consumers to stop using certain batteries from a well-known brand due to fire risk — some of those fires occurred even when the battery wasn't charging. This underscores the importance of using genuine parts and staying informed about product safety updates regardless of which brand you ride.

Other Common Causes of E-Bike Battery Fires

1. Mechanical Damage

Lithium-ion batteries store a lot of energy in a very small space. If they are dropped, crushed, or punctured, internal damage can cause a short circuit and thermal runaway. Even a small drop can compromise the battery's safety. The NFPA notes that when that energy is released in an uncontrolled manner, it generates heat, which can turn certain internal battery components into flammable and toxic gases.

2. Water and Debris Exposure

Batteries exposed to water and debris can unexpectedly ignite and explode. Always keep your battery dry and inspect it regularly for signs of water or corrosion.

3. Overheating and Poor Charging Practices

Charging batteries in direct sunlight, in hot environments, or too close to flammable materials can cause thermal overload. 

4. Structural Fires from E-Bike Batteries

Lithium-ion battery fires are not just dangerous — they spread fast. The FDNY has been sounding the alarm about the threat of lithium-ion batteries for years, and through education and enforcement, deaths from battery fires in some cities have dropped significantly.

Performance — Won't fully charge or takes much longer than usual

Have it inspected or replaced

Smoke — Smoke is coming from the battery

Get out and call 911 immediately

How to Stay Safe

The NFPA recommends following these three steps to reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires: Buy, Charge, and Recycle safely.

Buy only listed products. Look for a safety certification mark such as UL, ETL, or CSA on the packaging and product, which means it meets established safety standards.

Charge devices safely. Always use the cables that come with the product to charge it. If you need a new charger, buy one from the manufacturer or one that the manufacturer has approved. Charge your device on a hard surface — don't charge it under a pillow, on a bed, or on a couch. Don't overcharge your device; unplug it or remove the battery when it's fully charged. Plug the charger directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord or power strip.

The Riding Times Z8 manual also provides specific guidance: charge the battery for 7-9 hours until the charger light turns from red to green, never immerse the battery in water, store it at room temperature at 40%–60% capacity, and charge it once every three months during long-term storage.

Recycle batteries responsibly. Don't throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling bins because they could catch fire. Additional tips:

● Never charge in a hallway, bedroom, or near an exit

● If you upgrade your controller, upgrade your battery and motor at the same time

● If you notice any warning signs, stop using the battery immediately

● Store batteries and the devices they power at room temperature whenever possible; don't leave them in a hot car, in direct sunlight, or in freezing temperatures

● Contact the manufacturer directly if you have any questions about your battery or charging practices
